Famciclovir is antiviral medication that belongs to a group of nucleotides analogues. It is used to treat infections caused Herpes Simplex and Varicella zoster (shingles), including shingles with eye complications.

How does the medication work?
Famcyclovir is antiviral preparation, derivative of peniciclovir. In vivo famciclovir is converted into penciclovir that possesses antiviral activity against Herpes viruses and cytomegaloviruses (Herpes simplex types 1 and 2, Varicella zoster, Epstein-Barr). Under the action of thymidine kinase penciclovir is converted into penciclovir-triphosphate blocks the enzyme DNA polymerase necessary for viral DNA replication. The preparations selectively act on synthesis of viral DNA and do not significantly affect DNA replication of host cells

When Famciclovir is prescribed?

  • Infections caused by Herpes simplex (type I and II): primary infection, aggravation of chronic infection, suppressing the recurrent infection
  • Herpes simplex infections in patients with HIV
  • Infections caused by Varicella zoster (shingles), including postherpetic neuralgia

Famciclovir is not used to treat flu infections, or infections caused by fungi and viruses

What should I know before taking Famciclovir ?
Do not use this medication if you are allergic to Famciclovir or to any other medicines such as:

  • Acyclovir, Ganciclovir, Penciclovir and other antiviral medications

Do not take Famciclovir if any of the below conditions apply to you:

  • Severe kidney diseases including renal failure
  • Individual intolerance of lactose
  • Individual intolerance of galactose

Before taking Famciclovir, tell your health care provider about any other medicines you take or if you have any of the following disorders:

  • Liver diseases

If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeed, you should take Famciclovironly under a strict control of your doctor. Famciclovir belongs to a pregnancy category B meaning that safety of the medication in pregnant women has not been studied. Talk to your doctor about risk and benefits of taking Famciclovir during pregnancy.

How to take Famciclovir:
Famciclovir is available in the forms of tablets. Famciclovir tablets should be taken by mouth (orally). It can be taken with or without food.
Dosage of Famciclovir is prescribed individually by physician.

Take the entire amount of Famciclovir prescribed by your doctor, even if you feel better before the end of the treatment. If you stop taking medication too early, symptoms may return.
If you missed the scheduled dose, take the medication as soon as you remember, but skip the dose if it is almost the time for the following dose. Do not take two doses at once.

  • Other antiviral medications
