Ornidazole

Generic Name (active ingredient): Ornidazole
Brand Name: Dazolic,Tiberal

Ornidazole is antimicrobial and antiprotozoal drug used for treatment and prophylaxis of anaerobic infections, trichomoniasis, amoebiasis, giardiasis. It does not inhibits aldehyde dehydrogenase and that is why is compatible with alcohol.

How does the medication work?
Ornidazole is antiprotozoal medication. Action mechanism is associated with inhibiting the structure of DNA in susceptible microorganisms. Ornidazole is active against Trichomonas vaginalis, Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica as well as anaerobic bacteria including Bacteroides spp., Clostridium spp., Fusobacterium spp. and anaerobic cocci.

When Ornidazole is prescribed?

  • Trichomoniasis
  • Amoebiasis, amoebic dysentery, amoebiasis extraenteric (including amebic liver abscess)
  • Giardiasis
  • Prevention of infection caused by anaerobic bacteria during colon surgeries and in gynecology.

What should I know before taking Ornidazole?
Do not use this medication if you are allergic to Ornidazole or to any other medicines such as:

  • Tinidazole, Metronidazole and other nitroimidazole preparations

Do not take Ornidazole if any of the below conditions apply to you:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
  • Organic diseases of the central nervous system
  • Severe liver and kidney diseases
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding

Before taking Ornidazole, tell your health care provider about any other medicines you take or if you have any of the following disorders:

  • Liver and kidney diseases in anamnesis

If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeed, you should take Ornidazole only under a strict control of your doctor. Ornidazole belongs to a pregnancy category C meaning that it is not safe to use the medication during pregnancy. The medication causes embryotoxic and teratogenic effects.

How to take Ornidazole:
Ornidazole is available in the form of tablets. Ornidazole tablets should be taken orally swallowing whole without chewing. Dosage of Ornidazole is prescribed individually by physician.

Take the entire amount of Ornidazole prescribed by your doctor, even if you feel better before the end of the treatment. If you stop taking medication too early, symptoms may return.
If you missed the scheduled dose, take the medication as soon as you remember, but skip the dose if it is almost the time for the following dose. Do not take two doses at once.

What are the side effects of Ornidazole?
Ornidazole may cause the following side effects:
Drowsiness, headaches and gastrointestinal disorders (nausea). In some cases - CNS disorders such as dizziness, tremor, rigidity, loss of coordination, convulsions, fatigue, temporary loss of consciousness, signs of sensory or mixed peripheral neuropathy. There have been cases of changes in taste sensations, changes in liver function tests, skin reactions and reactions of hypersensitivity.

Which are Ornidazole overdose symptoms?
If you overdose Ornidazole, seek immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms include: seizures, depression, peripheral neuritis, disorientation, nausea and vomiting.

Which other medicines may affect Ornidazole?
Ornidazole may interact with the following groups of drugs:

  • Blood thinners
  • Coumarins
  • Muscle relaxants medications

How should I store Ornidazole?
You should store the medication at dry and protected from light place out of reach of children. Do not store the medication in the bathroom.
